GAS IS DANGEROUS
The fossil fuel often referred to as “natural” gas is actually 95% methane, a potent and highly dangerous greenhouse gas.
Methane is extremely explosive, harmful to health, kills trees and is 86 times more potent than CO2 in the first 20 years in the atmosphere. It is one of the key contributors to the climate change catastrophe.
Explosive
On September 13, 2018, a series of devastating gas explosions followed by eighty fires suddenly broke out in three towns in the Merrimack Valley. Across the US, a life-threatening gas pipeline accident occurs approximately every 40 hours. Read more on gas explosions
Gas leaks kill trees
Gas leaking underground suffocates tree roots, killing the trees that taxpayers spend millions of dollars to plant in our cities and towns. As the deterioration of gas pipes has accelerated, utilities have stopped their former practice of repairing gas leaks that harm trees. Read how gas leaks kill trees.
Destroys the climate
Methane gas is 84 times more damaging than carbon dioxide produced from coal during its first 20 years in the atmosphere.
Gas leaks have not decreased
Despite ten years and billions of dollars of gas pipeline replacement by the utilities, gas leaks have not significantly decreased. (get data and sources on this. HEET?)
Gas is poisonous
Methane gas is toxic. When we - and especially our children - breathe in the gas fumes from gas stoves and furnaces, we are risking our health. Methane gas contains toxins, carcinogens, and radioactive elements that end up in our lungs. Read about the risks to our health
Research
The Gas Transition Allies includes scientists, engineers, economists, gas safety experts, health professionals, and others who regularly document, monitor, and analyze issues regarding the gas system.
Our advocacy for more sustainable energy systems is strongly rooted in peer-reviewed data and science. This research and analysis informs our recommendations for accelerating an equitable transition off of fossil fuels.
